Launch-build starter planExplore first, spend time second, and build around Perfect Block

The first hours become much easier once you stop treating the 30-day calendar as a stopwatch. Free exploration, ordinary fights, and fast travel let you prepare before paying for marked quest actions.

1. Treat time as currency, not pressure

The campaign contains 30 day/night cycles, split into eight daytime and eight nighttime segments apiece. Time advances when the game shows an hourglass cost, not while you wander or think.

Before spending a segment, reveal nearby objectives and check the Journal for quests marked with a clock. Those objectives can expire. A quest with no deadline can usually wait while you handle a person or event that will not.

Prologue warning: getting caught stealing can cost four segments, and some Shrine upgrades also consume time. Read the prompt instead of clicking through it.

Use the complete time-limit guide for the 480-segment breakdown and the prologue route for the first day's quest order.

2. Build two loadouts for day and night

Human Coen and vampire Coen are complementary builds. During the day, swords and Witchcraft carry most encounters. At night, vampiric movement, claws, feeding, and blood abilities open different routes.

The character screen includes an Equipment Preview control for separate day and night presets. Use it. Put human-combat and Witchcraft bonuses in the daytime set, then switch to health, feeding, corruption, and vampire-ability bonuses for night. A single generic loadout wastes half of Coen's toolkit.

At night, climb regional towers when you can. Activating them reveals nearby points of interest as question marks, making later planning much easier without spending narrative time.

3. Learn Perfect Block before chasing damage

Dawnwalker's directional combat looks intimidating, but the clearest timing signal is the shield icon. Wait until it turns orange, then block. Unlock Perfect Riposte when available so a successful Perfect Block can lead into a guaranteed critical hit.

Do not drain stamina by holding a direction and reacting too early. Watch for unblockable attacks, dodge those, and save active abilities for openings. Blue, purple, and legendary weapons include weapon arts, which function like extra active skills on cooldown and do not require a separate skill purchase.

Useful early priorities include:

  • Endless Hunger for more vampire health and safer dialogue at low blood
  • Perfect Riposte to convert defense into critical damage
  • Charge, earned from Like Father, Like Son in the prologue
  • Broad Swing, found in the bandit camp east of Laslea
  • Swiftness, found northwest of Stoneward Post in Briar Sloughs

The Swordmastery manual guide lists the fixed ability locations.

4. Carry blood and use feeding deliberately

Vampire Coen does not rely on ordinary food for night healing. Loot human and animal corpses because they can drop blood consumables, and use Voracious Bite during combat when an activation charge is available.

Feeding on animals and hostile enemies is a low-consequence way to restore resources and raise Corruption. Drinking from major vrakhiri opponents can unlock unique abilities immediately, while vials obtained from Murohn or character quests can unlock or upgrade the same skills.

Avoid starting friendly nighttime conversations while critically wounded. Low health can push Coen toward an involuntary feeding outcome, including a documented fail state involving Anca. Heal or return during the day before speaking to a character you want to protect.

5. Take white dialogue options seriously

White dialogue is not always filler. Some optional white questions reveal yellow decisions, romance responses, or additional context that would otherwise remain hidden. Exhaust the harmless information choices before selecting the line that commits the scene.

Keep a rotating manual save before:

  • Any action with a large hourglass cost
  • The final step of a companion quest
  • A choice that changes a faction relationship
  • Drinking from or killing a named vrakhiri
  • A romance confession or “friends only” response

The narrative sandbox is designed around consequences, so there is no universal perfect route. Saves let you recover from a misread prompt without flattening every decision into a checklist.

6. A strong first-hours route

In the prologue, prioritize family and time-sensitive village outcomes. Complete Withering Away correctly, consider Page-Turner if you want Anca's romance, rescue Lazar through Deep Down before evening, resolve Blasphemy and Disturbed, then finish Like Father, Like Son.

After the prologue:

  1. Unlock a nearby tower at night to expose points of interest.
  2. Fight wildlife and camps for free XP instead of paying time only to level.
  3. Visit the Cursed Chasm in northwest Briar Sloughs for the legendary Durandal sword.
  4. Collect an early Swordmastery or Witchcraft manual that matches your preferred form.
  5. Start one major character or faction route instead of scattering time across every marker.

Beginner guide FAQ

Can you run out of time by exploring?

No. Ordinary exploration and fast travel do not continuously reduce the 30-day budget.

What should I spend skill points on first?

Prioritize survivability and reliable combat feedback: vampire health, Perfect Block follow-ups, and one dependable active ability for each form. Avoid unlocking time-costing skills during a time-sensitive prologue window.

What should I sell?

Silver and gold valuables are strong early sources of money. Keep weapons, armor, blood consumables, crafting items, and anything explicitly tied to a quest.

Is directional combat mandatory?

No. Omniattack and omniblock automate direction. Manual directional inputs offer more control and reward precise parries but are not required to progress.

Can I complete every quest in one run?

Do not plan on it. Some opportunities expire, and the game intentionally asks you to choose which stories deserve the limited calendar.

Which romance is easiest to start early?

Anca. Her route begins in the prologue through Withering Away and the optional Page-Turner scene. See the romance hub before spending the extra segment.
