Crake / Marat romance routeJoin the Manumits, finish Distant Shadows, then kiss him in A Closer Look

Crake is the game's male romance option. Escort him home and help with his wounds after What Moves the Dead. After Distant Shadows, tell Drogos you will speak to him, then meet Marat promptly: PowerPyx reports a 16-time-segment deadline for A Closer Look.

Spoiler warning: this guide names major Manumit quests, Crake's identity, the final romance choice, and his epilogue condition.

Crake romance quest order

Crake is also known as Marat. Use this as a route overview, then check the unlock conditions below:

  1. The Firebrand
  2. Shadows in the Woods
  3. Where Loyalty Lies
  4. What Hunts the Night
  5. What Moves the Dead
  6. Distant Shadows
  7. A Closer Look

Follow the Manumit story and keep a save before What Hunts the Night and the escort at the end of What Moves the Dead. The escort route is documented, but later player reports suggest earlier conversations may also matter; a complete hidden relationship formula has not been verified.

How to meet Crake

Begin with The Firebrand. The quest remains available whether Vlad survives the prologue or Coen later investigates his house. Speak with Mert at the end to start Shadows in the Woods, then meet Sara and Crake in the forest.

Rescue Sara promptly once you find her. PowerPyx's Shadows in the Woods walkthrough reports a two-day / 32-segment deadline after locating Sara. This is the rescue objective's timer, not a deadline counted from the start of the campaign. Resolve the rescue before leaving for other time-consuming quests.

Continue to Where Loyalty Lies and join the Manumit rebels. It is possible to approach their hideout directly in Svartrau, but following the earlier chain preserves more context and character scenes. If Vlad lived, a short Old Friends, New Friends scene is also available at the hideout.

Joining the Manumits is the route foundation. Treating Crake as only a one-scene encounter will not reach the romance because later quests are what turn suspicion into trust.

If the rebels have not contacted you again, Polygon's walkthrough identifies infamy level 4 as the invitation requirement.

Build trust through the Manumit quests

In What Hunts the Night, Coen and Crake share a quiet moment while hiding in a ruined house. Polygon's route recommends discussing Sara, acknowledging his grief, and offering support. Treat this as a documented supportive path, not proof that every listed response is compulsory.

Continue through What Moves the Dead and rescue him from the Murohn. PowerPyx's walkthrough documents this route to Distant Shadows: escort Crake back to the hideout, then choose “Let me help.” → “Quite bad.” → “Sure.” during the wound-care conversation. The author reports receiving Distant Shadows alongside the next rebellion quest on this route.

In Distant Shadows, follow Ascar in Tantari during daylight, then return to Marat. PowerPyx's quest walkthrough identifies a crucial step after Marat leaves: in Drogos's second dialogue choice, select “I'll go talk to him.” to receive A Closer Look. Choosing to leave Marat alone does not award the next quest in that walkthrough.

Ascar spotted you, or Marat returned angry?

Being spotted by Ascar does not fail Distant Shadows in PowerPyx's walkthrough; it ends the surveillance early and sends you back to Marat. The same source reports that Marat leaves angrily after the return conversation regardless of the investigation's outcome. His reaction alone is not proof that the romance failed. Continue to Drogos and check the quest handoff above. The full stealth route remains available if you reload an earlier save to see the missed events.

A Closer Look romance choice

A Closer Look has a reported 16-time-segment deadline. PowerPyx reports failure if you wait one in-game day after accepting the quest without speaking to Marat. Meet him promptly and complete the conversation before spending time elsewhere. The exact 16-segment limit is single-source reporting, not a timer we have tested ourselves.

Meet Crake at the marked location outside Svartrau. When he tries to push Coen away, choose the reassurance that nothing he says will change how Coen sees him. Crake makes the first move and then hesitates; choose to kiss him back to complete the romance scene.

If A Closer Look has not appeared, check the Drogos choice above as well as Distant Shadows completion. Reporting back to Marat alone is not sufficient in the documented route.

Crake romance not starting: what to check

  • No Distant Shadows: check whether you escorted Crake home and completed the wound-care conversation. If you skipped the escort, read the uncertainty below before trying the personal dialogue.
  • Escorted him but still no quest: check the earlier What Hunts the Night conversation as well; the reader reports below show why escorting alone should not be treated as a verified universal guarantee.
  • No A Closer Look: check Drogos's second choice after reporting back to Marat. The documented route requires agreeing to go speak to Marat.
  • A Closer Look failed after waiting: compare your elapsed quest time with the reported deadline above. We have no verified way to reopen it; an earlier save is the fallback to try.
  • Campaign cutoff: finish Distant Shadows before starting Rise at Dawn. Complete the timed A Closer Look promptly.
  • Crake dies: protect him during the escape and avoid approaching him as a starving vampire.

The campaign cutoff and death warnings come from Polygon's route walkthrough; the escort, Drogos choice, and numerical deadline come from the linked PowerPyx walkthroughs. Keep a save before the escort and before committing to the finale.

Distant Shadows needs daylight. Gamer Guides' quest entry lists a daytime trigger after What Moves the Dead. Once you have the quest, follow its Tantari objective during the day.

Skipped the escort? The alternative unlock is uncertain. PowerPyx reports that asking about the personal matter can instead send Drogos and close that dialogue. Its suggestion that maximum infamy may help is an untested hypothesis. We cannot confirm a required infamy level or a recovery route; save before testing this conversation.

A later warning from players: two reader comments dated September 10 on the Distant Shadows walkthrough point to earlier supportive dialogue in What Hunts the Night. One reports that escorting Crake at maximum infamy was insufficient, but replaying that earlier conversation unlocked the quest. These are reader reports, not a verified unlock rule; exact required choices and game versions remain unknown. Keep an earlier save; increasing infamy alone is not a confirmed fix.

Who Pulls the Strings continues the rebellion toward its finale; we have not verified it as a mandatory romance prerequisite. The documented escort-and-bandage route awards Distant Shadows while starting the next rebellion quest, so that route does not require finishing Who Pulls the Strings first. Other unlock paths remain unverified. If Distant Shadows is already in your Journal, follow it and keep the campaign cutoff above in mind.

If your Journal shows a different unlock order, send a correction with your game version, platform, the last quest completed, and a screenshot of the Distant Shadows objective if available. Note whether Who Pulls the Strings was unfinished when Distant Shadows appeared; that distinction helps check this prerequisite.

Gamer Guides' A Closer Look entry places the meeting outside Farriers' Gate, opposite Greifberg, and lists one time segment for the romance choice. That is the scene cost, not the total cost of Crake's questline.

How to get Crake in the epilogue

Romancing Crake does not guarantee that he appears in every ending. Launch-build reporting ties his on-screen epilogue appearance to completing Rise at Dawn, the final Manumit route. Other endings can still mention his fate, but may not give the couple a direct scene.

Do not choose the Manumit ending only for a romance cameo unless that faction outcome also fits your version of Coen. The relationship scene and the campaign ending are separate decisions.

Crake romance FAQ

Are Crake and Marat the same person?

Yes. Marat is his name; Crake is the identity used around the rebellion.

Is Crake a male romance option?

Yes. Coen can romance him in A Closer Look, after progressing through his Manumit quests and Distant Shadows. Completing the Manumit ending is not required for that scene; the epilogue condition is separate.

Can you romance Crake and Anca?

Yes. The game does not enforce romance exclusivity.

Do you have to finish the Manumit ending?

No for the intimate scene. Rise at Dawn matters for Crake's direct epilogue appearance.

What is the most important dialogue choice?

During A Closer Look, reassure Crake that his confession does not change how Coen sees him, then choose to return the kiss.

Why did I not receive A Closer Look?

After Distant Shadows, check whether you agreed to go speak to Marat in Drogos's second dialogue choice. PowerPyx reports that leaving him alone does not award the quest. A later recovery has not been verified.

Is the deadline the same as the scene cost?

No. PowerPyx reports a deadline of 16 time segments after accepting A Closer Look. Gamer Guides lists one segment for the romance choice. The deadline and the scene cost measure different things; neither is the total cost of the entire route.

Surveillance outcomes, the documented handoff, and later reader reports were rechecked September 12, 2026. The numerical deadline remains source-reported; the earlier-dialogue dependency and alternative unlocks are unverified. This is a sourced guide, not our own complete playthrough.
