The review embargo ended on August 31. Metacritic currently classifies the game as “Generally Favorable,” with the PS5 aggregate based on more than 60 critic reviews.
When did the Dawnwalker review embargo lift?
Final reviews began publishing on August 31, 2026, three days before the September 3 launch. The previously circulated 15:00 UTC time is no longer the useful question: multiple named outlets published scored reviews that day, confirming that the review window had opened.
The old distinction between a provisional community report and a live review wave is now resolved. Players can compare completed reviews, platform scores, and launch-build performance reports before buying.
Current Metacritic scores
Metacritic showed the following platform aggregates when checked on September 4:
Generally Favorable, based on more than 60 critic reviews.
Based on 37 critic reviews at the time of the check.
Based on seven critic reviews; the smaller sample can move quickly.
Metacritic had not yet published a stable user aggregate.
Scores change as more reviews arrive. Always read the critic count with the number: an 88 based on seven Xbox reviews is less stable than an 83 based on more than 60 PS5 reviews.
What do reviews praise?
The recurring positive themes are the dark medieval setting, the human-by-day and vampire-by-night loop, consequential quest choices, and a world that encourages multiple playthroughs. Reviewers also highlight the score, atmosphere, and the way the 30-day calendar turns side stories into real tradeoffs.
Metacritic's PS5 breakdown showed a large positive majority and no negative reviews in the displayed aggregate at the time of the check. Individual high scores praised the lived-in world and the combination of combat with day/night systems.
What do reviews criticize?
The most common reservations concern technical roughness, traversal, repetition, animation quality, and whether the time system always delivers on its promise. Some reviewers enjoyed the directional combat and deliberate pacing; others found the same systems clumsy or arbitrary.
That split matters more than the average alone. Players who like authored RPG quests, imperfect choices, and a limited campaign budget are closer to the positive audience. Players looking for frictionless open-world completion or perfectly polished traversal should read a lower-scoring review as well as a glowing one.
PC performance also deserves a separate check. Official specifications assume Balanced upscaling, and launch testing found heavy forest scenes below the advertised 1440p/60 target on the listed midrange hardware. Use the best PC settings guide rather than treating a review score as a benchmark.
Preview, review, or performance test?
- Hands-on preview: describes a limited session and cannot judge the complete game.
- Final review: evaluates the full release experience or a substantial completed run and includes a score or verdict.
- Performance analysis: should state hardware, settings, upscaler, patch, and tested scenes.
- User review: reflects one player's experience and becomes more useful after a meaningful number of verified ratings accumulates.
The pre-release four-hour impressions remain useful for comparing expectations with the finished game, but they should no longer be presented as the newest evidence.
Should you buy The Blood of Dawnwalker?
The aggregate answer is positive: critics broadly recommend the game, especially for players who value reactive story choices and replayable RPG routes. The safer buying check is still platform-specific:
- On PC, compare your hardware with the official upscaled performance targets and expect to tune shadows, lighting, foliage, and detail.
- On console, choose the 60 FPS Performance mode if responsiveness matters more than visual density.
- If the 30-day structure sounds stressful, know that free exploration does not run down the timer and missing the deadline is a story consequence rather than an instant save-ending game over.
- If romance or a specific faction route matters, read the relevant quest chain before spending too many segments elsewhere.
Dawnwalker review FAQ
Are Blood of Dawnwalker reviews live?
Yes. Final reviews began appearing August 31, 2026.
What is the current Metacritic score?
At the September 4 check: PS5 83, PC 84, and Xbox Series X 88. Counts and averages can change as new reviews are added.
Is the game reviewing well?
Yes. Metacritic labels the main PS5 aggregate “Generally Favorable.” The consensus is positive, with repeated caveats about technical polish and execution.
Which platform has the highest score?
Xbox Series X showed the highest number at 88, but it also had the smallest sample—seven reviews—so direct platform comparisons are premature.
Is there a reliable user score yet?
Not at the time of this check. Metacritic was still waiting for enough ratings and its user-review window to open.
Scores and critic counts were read directly from Metacritic on September 4, 2026. They are a dated snapshot, not permanent values; platform sample sizes are kept beside every score to avoid false precision.
